When people join your membership site they pay a monthly fee and so you only need to get them to join 1 time but you keep getting a payment for each month they remain a member on your site.

There is also the possibility of creating a membership site with different membership levels where you can offer more and charge more. Also a membership site doesn't have to provide new content being constantly updated or learning of any kind(though most membership sites do).
